Adaptive Data Manager™ Chosen for New Electronic Medical Record

01/23/2002

Northbrook, Illinois, January 23, 2002 - Focused Health Solutions, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a licensing and consulting agreement with Intelligent Medical Objects, Inc., involving the new IMO flagship product, Adaptive Data Manager™ (ADM). ADM will be used to create an advanced electronic medical record to support the rapidly growing employee and retiree health services offered to self-insured employers by Focused Health Solutions.

ADM is an advanced data management solution for complex data bases. It provides an information storage and database development environment based on a meta-data model along with a suite of development tools. Its unusual flexibility allows rapid definition and accommodates continuous change in database structure. At the same time, ADM features an unusual level of security and control, plus low maintenance overhead.

Judith Hicks, President of Focused Health Solutions, comments on this new capability: "Through our FocusCare Program, our business involves 24/7 monitoring of individuals with chronic health conditions. Our nurse managers require a sophisticated and totally customized electronic medical record to assist us in following program enrollees' progress, tracking outcomes, and maintaining privacy. The ADM solution fits our needs best."

Frank Naeymi-Rad, CEO at Intelligent Medical Objects since the company's formation in 1994, discusses the origins of the ADM solution. "When we developed our first electronic medical record (HealthPoint ACS) for Glaxo Wellcome, we ran into some very complex database challenges. These included multi-site schema management, the repository requirement, a data warehouse for analysis, and physicians' data entry. We were successful with implementation, but the ongoing changes required for multi-specialties, the flexibility expected by different users, and the demands imposed by regulatory agencies were too costly to handle effectively. As a result, much of the dream was unrealized. To date, most of the industry's investment in developing the electronic medical record repository in health care has become a black hole. We decided that the constant changes in structure, the lack of consensus among physicians, and the new opportunities associated with ongoing medical discoveries absolutely required highly flexible layers of architecture--both visual and data. It turns out that employer-sponsored health services are no different in this respect."

Dr. Andrew Kanter, IMO President and Chief Medical Officer, adds, "In the health care environment, the data model is constantly evolving. Changing user requirements and new regulations such as HIPAA put tremendous pressure on databases and application developers. ADM provides both HIPAA-compliant security and maximal flexibility right out of the box--empowering systems professionals to rapidly deliver the features demanded by the HIS community."

With IMO's ADM and Visual ADM™ development platform, Focused Health Solutions expects to have a totally customized medical record in less time than it would take to implement any off-the-shelf solutions--at a substantially lower cost. Hicks noted, "This is a sound financial and infrastructure decision that will strengthen our strategic position."
